Zamboanga City is responding to increased construction activity threatening the Once Islas, a popular eco-tourism destination.
Mayor Khymer Adan Olaso has called for tighter regulations to protect the islands from unchecked development, which he says endangers their natural beauty and integrity. Officials have noted that many new constructions are being undertaken by outside parties.
The Once Islas comprise a cluster of 11 islands off the coast of the Panubigan and Dita villages, boasting pristine beaches and vibrant marine life.
To enhance the protection of these islands, Olaso has formally requested the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to classify Once Islas, along with Pasonanca Natural Park and Great Santa Cruz Island, as protected areas.
Forester Domiliza Campaner from DENR-9 pointed out that Once Islas currently lacks protected status. She emphasized the need for a local resolution to proclaim the site as protected while awaiting national acknowledgment.
In collaboration with the City Legal Office, city officials are working on an executive order and a proposed ordinance aimed at regulating development activities on the islands.

Olaso has also instructed barangay officials to monitor and report any unauthorized exploitation of natural resources in the area.
