The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is refocusing its efforts to prioritize the survival of seedlings planted across the Philippines. This shift follows the successful distribution of 4.2 million saplings on Arbor Day, significantly surpassing the target of three million.
A New Era for Environmental Initiatives
The true measure of Arbor Day goes beyond how many trees we plant today, but how many continue to grow years from now. A sapling survives only when people care for it.

On June 25, the DENR's initiative was a part of a broader directive from President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to enhance environmental protection and restoration efforts. The campaign is viewed as critical to developing resilient communities against climate change.
The Arbor Day event launched 'Luntiang Bukas,' DENR's flagship project aimed at fostering green and sustainable communities. Participants covered over 2,347 hectares, contributing to diverse ecosystems throughout the country.
Following the planting phase, the DENR will implement a post-planting monitoring framework. This will involve local offices collaborating with community members to ensure seedlings are adequately cared for.
Community involvement is seen as essential for the campaign's success. Youth volunteers have expressed their commitment to these efforts, emphasizing the social, economic, and environmental benefits of sustained environmental activities.
As Randy Matibag, a local environment officer, stated, "It is important for us all, along with the volunteers, to care for them, to water them and make sure they live so that our efforts are not wasted."
