In a significant discovery, scientists have pinpointed nearly 166,000 square kilometers (64,000 square miles) of coral reefs that demonstrate resilience to climate change. This area is three times larger than previous estimates, offering new hope for the protection of these vital ecosystems.

Research Highlights Climate Resilience

The analysis was based on 45,000 coral surveys combined with decades of climate and ocean data. It uncovered climate-resilient reefs distributed across 71 countries and 100 territories, including previously unrecognized regions in the Caribbean and the Pacific.

'Coral reefs are often framed as ecosystems beyond saving. This research shows otherwise: we know where the hope is, and what we need now is political will,' said Emily Darling, director of coral conservation at the Wildlife Conservation Society.

As nations aim to protect 30% of their land and marine environments by 2030, known as the '30 by 30' initiative, the findings of this study provide critical data to guide government actions. Darling noted the urgency in protecting these reefs, especially with the impending super El Niño event.

Stacy Jupiter, co-author of the research, highlighted the potential for strategic funding based on the resilience of specific reefs. 'In certain cases, where reefs are below certain benchmarks for ecosystem function, it may be a case of triage, where we may need to leave those places,' she explained.
