Thailand is setting its sights on achieving international success for its BL (boys love) and GL (girls love) series, akin to the phenomenal rise of K-pop. This ambition was articulated during the Thai Content in the Philippines 2026 networking event, hosted by the Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP) in Makati City.
Cultural Integration of BL and GL Genres
Thai GL and BL has become something like a culture already.
Wannanpong Waiyawuththanapoom, DITP Trade Officer
Wannanpong Waiyawuththanapoom emphasized the cultural significance of these genres in Thailand. He noted that their success is attributed to a diverse array of content, which includes not only television dramas but also books, films, and even games.
- Thai BL and GL series are attracting international fans and tourism.
- Various Thai companies are expanding their reach globally, including to the USA and Latin America.
The networking event was a part of a broader strategy to enhance the visibility of Thai productions and foster collaborations with Philippine media companies. The trade mission reportedly generated a potential business value of THB 140 million, approximately PHP 263 million or USD 4.2 million.
Philippine buyers showed a keen interest in vertical-format content, a storytelling style optimized for mobile consumption. This trend reflects the increasing demand for mobile-friendly entertainment.
Beyond traditional licensing, discussions included co-investment, co-production, and joint marketing initiatives. Such collaborative efforts could position Thai entertainment firms as key partners in the production landscape.
As Thailand's entertainment industry continues to grow, the push for global recognition in the BL and GL spheres could mirror the success of K-pop, tapping into a vast international audience eager for fresh and diverse content.
