Colombian pop icon Shakira performed a free concert in Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana Beach, captivating approximately 2 million fans on Saturday night.

The event, praised by the city's mayor, follows similar large-scale concerts by other artists like Madonna and Lady Gaga in recent years.

This concert is part of Shakira's "Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran" world tour, promoting her latest album released in 2024.

Shakira took the stage just after 11 p.m., over an hour late, greeted by cheers as drones above displayed the message "I love you Brazil".

Celebrating a Long-Lasting Bond with Brazil

Reflecting on her first visit to Brazil three decades ago, Shakira expressed her gratitude to the fans.

I arrived here when I was 18 years old, dreaming about singing for you. And now look at this. Life is magical.

The setlist included hits like "Hips Don’t Lie" and "La Bicicleta," culminating with her recent track, "BZRP Music Sessions #53/66," which addresses her personal journey.

During the show, she emphasized the resilience of women, stating, "Us women, every time we fall we get up a little wiser."

Economic Boost for Rio

Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere noted the concert's significance for the city's economy post-Carnival, estimating a return of 40 times the investment made for the event.

City studies project that the concert could generate around 777 million reais (approximately $155 million) as tourists flock to the area.

Fans began arriving at Copacabana as early as Saturday morning, eager to secure prime spots on the beach.

Street vendors capitalized on the crowd, selling everything from snacks to beverages, with some even bringing additional essentials for concertgoers.

A Symbol of Latin Pride

Attendees celebrated not only Shakira's music but also the unity of the Latino community.

These artists are making it clear that Brazil, Puerto Rico, Colombia, and other countries are part of Latin America. And that America is not the United States.
