At the Vaclav Havel International Prize for Creative Dissent in Oslo, Richard Gere condemned Donald Trump, calling him a 'maniac' and highlighting the perilous state of democracy.
Gere, 76, expressed deep concern for the future of the United States, stating, 'We're living in the darkest moment that I've experienced on this planet.' He emphasized the shocking reality of Trump's presidency.
'First day, this guy dismantled almost everything that was good about the US government and the US people,' Gere remarked to an audience of several hundred.
'How is this even possible? Because we went to sleep. We didn't care. We didn't vote. We didn't really listen.'
Richard Gere, Actor
Gere's criticism of Trump is not new; he previously labeled the former president a 'bully' in February 2025. His recent speech also highlighted the urgency of being vigilant against authoritarianism.
While announcing awards to activists Gao Zhen and Sai, Gere drew parallels between contemporary political climates and historical atrocities, recalling a recent visit to the Dachau concentration camp. He warned of an emerging 'dictatorship of monsters'.
His comments reflect a growing concern among artists and activists about the rise of authoritarianism globally. Gere's advocacy for Tibet and frequent dialogues with the Dalai Lama showcase his commitment to social justice.
Currently residing in Spain with his wife Alejandra Silva, Gere continues to engage in discussions about human rights and democracy.
