Park Bo-young is venturing into the crime genre with her latest series, 'Gold Land.' Known for her roles in romance and comedy, this marks a significant shift for the actress.
In 'Gold Land,' she plays Kim Hee-ju, an airport worker who becomes embroiled in a gold bar scandal, leading her to explore themes of morality and greed.
Despite her petite stature and bright personality, Park embraced the challenge of portraying a character with a darker narrative.
'People might think I would seize the gold and return it, but I wanted to explore what happens when someone chases their desires,' Park explained.
Hee-ju's journey reveals her obsession with wealth and desire, presenting a stark contrast to Park's previous roles.
To embody Hee-ju, Park underwent a physical transformation, losing weight and adopting a more worn-down appearance, as directed by Kim Sung-hoon.
'The director wanted me to look drained and worn out. I aimed to reflect the character's emotional and physical struggles,' she said.
Park's commitment to her role allows her to connect with Hee-ju's complexities, acknowledging the allure of greed.
'A part of me wants to keep my hands on the gold. I think I can live vicariously through Hee-ju,' she shared.
Kim Sung-hoon praised Park for her nuanced performance, stating she effectively conveyed the character's inner turmoil and transformation.
'She did everything she could to portray that evolution and transformation. While you see her as Bo-young, I see her as Hee-ju,' he noted.
'Gold Land' premiered on April 29 and also features Kim Sung-cheol, Lee Hyun-wook, and Moon Jeong-hee in key roles.
