Filipino children will soon have a new companion in the form of Agos, a five-year-old character from the animated series *Agos, Ang Batang Isla*. Created by Amber Studios MNL, this show aims to foster a connection to Filipino culture and promote outdoor activities, countering the trend of children being glued to screens.
A Cultural Reconnection
We want to create an animated series for Filipino kids where we highlight the importance of being family-oriented while including the art of play, and love for culture and the environment.
Jacque Manabat, CEO of Amber Studios MNL
Agos embarks on daily adventures that begin with her asking her parents for permission to explore. Each episode is designed to showcase her interactions with friends, local wildlife, and community members, culminating in her return home by sunset.
Addressing Literacy and Cultural Gaps
The creators of *Agos* are motivated by the alarming statistics surrounding literacy in the Philippines, where 91% of ten-year-olds struggle with basic reading and writing skills, according to the World Bank. Manabat emphasizes the importance of children seeing their language and culture reflected in media.
- Agos is inspired by a real girl from Zambales.
- The series features a book in multiple Philippine languages.
The animation uses motion capture technology, making Agos’ movements authentic and relatable. This approach involves local talent, including young animators from Northwest Samar State University, who are gaining practical experience on the project.
A Call to Explore
With Agos, the creators hope to inspire children to appreciate their surroundings and engage in outdoor activities, contrasting the digital distractions prevalent today. The team is also developing a book to reach children without access to screens.
The first episode of *Agos, Ang Batang Isla* is set for release mid-year, with updates shared via Amber Studios’ social media platforms. The goal is for Filipino children to identify with Agos and feel a sense of belonging.
