Gab Pangilinan is making waves as Mary Magdalene in the Manila production of 'Jesus Christ Superstar.' Her portrayal emphasizes the character's emotional depth and humanity.
In preparing for her role, Pangilinan connected with Mary’s faith and beliefs, aiming to present a sincere and honest interpretation.
"When we were rehearsing, I aimed to portray Mary in a truthful and natural way," she stated during a press event. "I'm excited for people to see this version of Mary that reveals her human side."
Pangilinan highlighted the importance of showcasing the human aspects of all characters in the musical, including Jesus, Judas, and others.
Inspired by her predecessor Joanna Ampil, who played Mary on the West End, Pangilinan expressed her eagerness to explore this role and connect with her history.
"Getting to know Mary more is exciting, especially with the support from Joanna," she shared, reflecting on the encouragement she received.
Taking on this significant role pushed Pangilinan out of her comfort zone, marking her first experience in rehearsals without familiar faces.
"I had to enter a rehearsal room where I didn’t know anyone. It was a challenge, but it also opened me up to new experiences," she remarked.
The actress noted that vulnerability is a crucial part of theater, and she felt fortunate to work with her supportive castmates.
This production of 'Jesus Christ Superstar' has reignited Pangilinan's passion for theater, reminding her why she loves the art form.
The Manila staging runs from May 2 to 31 at The Theatre in Solaire, featuring a cast that includes Luke Street, Javon King, and more.
