'Kanlungan' has become a cherished anthem in the Philippines, recognized for its emotional depth and social significance. Although Noel Cabangon is the voice most associated with the song, the narrative of its composer, Rom Dongeto, reveals a rich tapestry of activism and artistry.

A Song Born from Activism

Rom Dongeto's artistic journey began in Tondo during the 1980s, a period marked by social upheaval and the fight against dictatorship. Inspired by protest musicians at a concert, he dedicated himself to using music as a means of activism.

‘Ito ang gusto kong gawin. Ito ang gusto kong maging vocation bilang isang aktibista,’” said Dongeto. (This is what I want to do. This is what I want my vocation to be as an activist.)

He formed the cultural group Sinaglahi during his college years, collaborating with fellow artists to create music that resonated with the struggles of their time.

The Evolution of 'Kanlungan'

'Kanlungan' emerged from Dongeto's experiences in the activist scene, becoming part of Buklod's third album, *Sa Kandungan ng Kalikasan* in 1992. The song, written in just two days, encapsulates themes of human connection and ecological responsibility.

While the vivid imagery suggests a rural upbringing, Dongeto clarifies that he composed it in Tondo, illustrating his imaginative prowess.

Controversy and Commercialization

In 2003, Dongeto faced backlash when 'Kanlungan' was licensed for a McDonald's commercial, prompting accusations of selling out. Activists criticized the ad for its perceived contradictions to the song's original message.

Despite the controversy, Dongeto and Cabangon defended their choice, believing it was essential to broaden the song's audience and impact.

Legacy of 'Kanlungan'

'Kanlungan' has since transcended its commercial origins to become a timeless feature of Filipino music, resonating with audiences across generations. Today, it serves as both a nostalgic melody and a poignant reminder of humanity's duty to the environment.

As Dongeto reflects, 'Kanlungan' is not merely a love song; it embodies a call to action for environmental stewardship, reminding us of the beauty we risk losing.
