Dua Lipa is suing Samsung in the United States for trademark infringement. The pop singer claims the South Korean tech giant unlawfully used her image to enhance television sales.
Her legal team submitted the lawsuit in California on Friday, alleging that Samsung engaged in "massive, continuing, unauthorized commercial exploitation" of her likeness. The suit specifically targets the use of her image on cardboard boxes for televisions.
In response, Samsung stated that Lipa's image was obtained through a third-party content provider for its free streaming service, Samsung TV Plus. The company added that it received assurances from the partner that proper permissions were granted for the image's use.
The lawsuit features a photo of the television box, prominently displaying Lipa's face among various images. This particular photo, titled "Dua Lipa-Backstage at Austin City Limits, 2024," is registered with the United States copyright office.
Lipa's complaint highlights her extensive list of commercial partnerships, which include high-profile brands like Puma, Versace, and Yves Saint Laurent. It emphasizes her selective approach to endorsements.
According to the lawsuit, Lipa has developed a premium brand through exclusive sponsorships and would not have consented to the use of her likeness for Samsung's products.
The lawsuit outlines eight civil offenses, including copyright infringement and violation of the right of publicity. Lipa seeks a permanent injunction and damages exceeding $15 million.
Ms. Lipa is highly selective in her commercial partnerships and has cultivated a premium brand through carefully curated, high-end sponsorships and endorsements.
