In Calamba, Misamis Occidental, educator Jessiel Tagapan is at the forefront of a movement to preserve the Subanen dialect and its cultural traditions. As the first Indigenous peoples (IP) teacher in the province, she emphasizes the role of language in sustaining the Subanen heritage.

Reviving Language and Tradition

We bring back the language because it is an introduction, especially to functions, which they call rituals.

Tagapan's method involves immersing students in traditional practices, taking them to local rivers to witness rituals performed by elders. This hands-on approach helps students connect with their heritage.

She noted that parental consent allows children to participate in these cultural observations, reinforcing the continuity of their traditions.

  • Students learn essential vocabulary in their native language
  • The school developed its own curriculum for Subanen education over 10 years

The Department of Education has not provided a standard curriculum for the Subanen language, prompting the school to create its own resources. Tagapan believes this effort equips all teachers to instruct students in both spoken and written forms of Subanen.

She encourages her students to take their education seriously, emphasizing that their learning is vital for the future of Subanen culture.

Try to study because this is not for us but for the children who will keep our culture.

Community leader Gukum Alex Cobe echoed Tagapan's sentiments, highlighting the importance of cultural preservation. He expressed the community's aspiration to establish a tribal hall to support initiatives and meetings.

Kyla Ba-aclo, crowned Miss Lakambini 2026, advocates for Subanen culture through festivals, aiming to raise awareness about their identity beyond Misamis Occidental.

Tagapan's efforts in Calamba exemplify the critical role of education in preserving Indigenous identities. As the community continues to navigate modernization, the commitment to language and culture remains a beacon of hope for future generations.
