The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has initiated the 'Tara, Basa!' Tutoring Program in the Calabarzon region, aimed at enhancing literacy among struggling readers.

Launched on May 4, the program targets 3,855 learners, particularly incoming Grade 2 students identified by the Department of Education (DepEd) as needing additional reading support.

These learners hail from 250 elementary schools across Bacoor City, Lucena City, and 33 municipalities in Quezon province.

Additionally, tutorial sessions for another 1,395 students in Tayabas City, Calaca City, and certain Laguna towns are set to begin soon.

Targeted Literacy Support

Under this initiative, selected college students conduct 20-day tutorial sessions designed to improve children's reading skills before the new school year.

Student volunteers also lead 'Nanay-Tatay' sessions for parents and guardians, focusing on fostering responsible parenting and encouraging reading at home.

A total of 1,673 college students from local universities have been enlisted to support the program this year.

Empowering Students and Families

The Tara, Basa! initiative, which began in July 2023 in the National Capital Region, has expanded to 11 other regions across the country.

It offers financial assistance to college students from low-income families, particularly those studying education and social work, in exchange for their tutoring services.

Participants will receive compensation based on the regional wage rate after completing the required service.

The program was formally established as a key government project through Executive Order No. 76, signed on November 22, 2024.

The Tara, Basa! program is a collaborative effort between the DSWD and DepEd, retooling past education assistance initiatives.
