Engr. John Veluz Labrador, a Cebuano, achieved the top rank in the April 2026 Registered Electrical Engineering Licensure Examination (REELE). He believes that success in board exams doesn't solely rely on long hours of studying.
Labrador, from Barangay Babag in Lapu-Lapu City, emphasizes the need for balance. He argues that maintaining relationships and taking breaks is just as crucial as mastering technical skills.
He advises fellow students to spend time with loved ones during their review period. "Spend time with your people. If you want to enjoy, enjoy gyud," he said.

Labrador's approach to studying was flexible. He refrained from rigid schedules, stating, "If kapoy, matulog ko" (If I’m tired, I sleep). This method allowed him to study at his own pace.
Despite initially setting a goal to be in the Top 5, reaching the number one spot surprised him. He noted that many contenders were highly trained for the examination.
Academic Achievements
A Summa Cum Laude graduate from the University of the Philippines Diliman, Labrador aimed to challenge himself academically. He had previously been a valedictorian in high school.
His academic journey inspired him to pursue excellence, as he aspired to follow in the footsteps of a former classmate who topped a board exam.

Labrador utilized a dual-review center approach, inspired by other topnotchers. He found that attending multiple review sessions helped him maximize his learning experience.

Following his success, Labrador plans to take a break but remains open to new opportunities. He encourages aspiring topnotchers to balance pressure with personal well-being.
