The Medellin National Science and Technology School (MNSTS) has made a significant impact at the 25th World Robot Olympiad (WRO) Philippines 2026, held in Pasay City from June 22 to 25. Competing for the first time, the MNSTS Robotics Team showcased their talents with a third-place finish in the Master AI Robot Cup and eighth place in the Global Artificial Intelligence Robot division.

The achievements of the MNSTS Robotics Team come after just two weeks of preparation, following the arrival of new robotics kits funded by the Cebu Provincial Government. Team member Jose Bartolome IV emphasized the necessity for ongoing government investment in education to foster future innovators.

Despite a challenging timeline, with most teams having months of preparation, the MNSTS team utilized their time effectively. Coaches Raymart Gabutan and Anita Batandolo implemented focused training regimens to maximize the team’s readiness.
Provincial School Board Focal Person Christopher Baricuatro noted that the robotics kits, costing P109,000 each, were part of a larger investment of P5.9 million aimed at enhancing STEM education across Cebu. This initiative reflects a broader commitment to improving educational resources and equipping students with essential skills for the future.
Baricuatro stated, "The Province of Cebu has the funds, so we will pour it into the schools. For robotics, we have the upgrading of speech labs, and upcoming smart classrooms." This support aligns with the Cebu provincial government's goal to expand opportunities in science and technology education.
The success of the MNSTS Robotics Team was formally recognized during the State of the Municipality Address (Soma) by Mayor Edwin Salimbangon on June 30, highlighting the importance of collaboration between local governments and educational institutions.
The World Robot Olympiad serves as a national qualifier for a global competition aimed at promoting creativity and problem-solving among students through robotics challenges. The MNSTS team's success signifies a bright future for Cebu's educational landscape in STEM.
