The National Police Commission (NAPOLCOM) has initiated administrative proceedings against Police Staff Sergeant Tyran John Miranda of the Pasay City Police Station due to serious allegations of domestic abuse.
Kara, Miranda's live-in partner, has claimed that the abuse escalated significantly since December 2022, including a disturbing incident where he allegedly pointed a firearm at her.
Claims of Years of Abuse
He abused me repeatedly, physically, emotionally, and mentally. He keeps beating me up.
Kara, Victim
In a revealing press conference, Kara showcased security footage that she claims documents the abusive incidents. These videos reportedly depict Miranda kicking her down the stairs and pursuing her while she was holding their child.
Despite previously filing a case against him, Kara had initially chosen not to pursue it in hopes of maintaining family unity. However, she has since taken decisive legal action, filing a complaint under the Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act of 2004.
Kara expressed her newfound resolve, stating, "I just fought back now. Just now."
Miranda acknowledged his actions during the press event, admitting, "I was carried away by my hotheadedness," and stated his willingness to accept punishment for his behavior.
Following the allegations, Miranda has been relieved of his duties and placed under restrictive custody.
NAPOLCOM Vice Chairperson Rafael Vicente Calinisan condemned the actions depicted in the footage, asserting that there is no justification for such violence.
I don’t think there’s an excuse for someone hitting a female, multiple times at that.
Rafael Vicente Calinisan, NAPOLCOM Vice Chairperson
Calinisan emphasized the importance of protecting victims, stating that NAPOLCOM is coordinating with the National Capital Region Police Office to ensure Kara's safety.
He encouraged other victims of abuse to come forward, asserting, "Do not allow yourselves to be hurt by any man, especially the police. You should report it; that is your right."
The NAPOLCOM's Inspection, Monitoring and Investigation Service (IMIS) has been directed to expedite the investigation and file formal charges against Miranda within the week.
