Authorities seized approximately P3 billion worth of smuggled cigarettes during a significant operation at Gothong Private Port in Nasipit, Agusan del Norte.
The operation took place on May 8, 2026, and involved the collaborative efforts of the Police Regional Office 13 (PRO13) and the Bureau of Customs (BOC13), among other law enforcement agencies.
Maj. Jennifer Ometer from PRO13 explained that the announcement of the seizure was delayed to allow for a thorough inventory of the large volume of goods.
Just a day prior, on May 7, another significant bust occurred in Carmen, Agusan del Norte, where authorities intercepted smuggled cigarettes valued at P7 million.
This earlier operation was initiated following a tip-off regarding suspicious unloading activities from a pump boat.
Under instructions from Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., the PNP has intensified operations against economic sabotage, focusing particularly on the illegal cigarette trade.
Police Brig. Gen. Marcial Mariano Magistardo IV, Director of PRO13, emphasized the PNP's commitment to dismantling smuggling networks.
The recent operation led to the confiscation of 54 container vans filled with various foreign cigarette brands, including Modern, Nise, and Boosku.
These goods, now in the custody of BOC-13, will undergo further verification and assessment.
