A driver implicated in a recent gas-and-run incident in Quezon City surrendered to police on Wednesday night. The 39-year-old, identified by the alias 'Michael,' is now facing estafa charges and the potential revocation of his driver's license.
Quezon City Police District (QCPD) spokesperson Maj. Jennifer Gannaban confirmed the arrest. The incident occurred on May 3 when the suspect allegedly drove off after refueling his grayish-blue Toyota Vios with P1,500 worth of gasoline.
Despite Michael's subsequent apology to the gas station attendant and repayment of the fuel cost, Philippine National Police (PNP) spokesperson Brig. Gen. Randulf Tuaño stated that the charges would still proceed.
Details of the Incident
Tuaño reported that Michael claimed he mistakenly believed he had paid with his credit card while talking to his wife during a disagreement. However, the gas station attendant disputed this account.
The police traced the vehicle back to a resident of Nueva Ecija, known by the alias 'Jherosalyn.' Upon investigation, authorities found that her husband, Michael, had been driving the car during the incident.
Additionally, the same vehicle was allegedly involved in a traffic violation last October, raising concerns over Michael's driving record.
Increasing Gas-and-Run Incidents
This case marks the third gas-and-run incident reported in Quezon City this year, coinciding with rising fuel prices. The QCPD noted a pattern of similar thefts, including a previous case involving a transport network vehicle driver who also surrendered after failing to pay for fuel.
In April, authorities arrested three individuals for stealing P1,500 worth of gasoline at another gas station. The PNP has urged the Land Transportation Office to revoke the licenses of offenders to deter such crimes.
