The Department of Energy (DoE) in the Philippines has approved a significant batch of 137 energy projects, which collectively generate 17.8 gigawatts (GW). These projects are now set for system impact studies (SIS) with the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines.
Major Capacity Increases from Energy Storage and Renewables
Among these projects, 85 battery energy storage systems (BESS) contribute a total of 7,610 megawatts (MW). These systems play a vital role in enhancing grid reliability by storing excess energy.
The DoE's endorsement also includes 46 renewable energy projects with a cumulative capacity of 6,206 MW and six conventional projects totaling 1,863 MW. The largest initiative is CI San Jose Corp.'s 800-MW wind farm, which spans multiple municipalities in Iloilo, Antique, and Capiz.
Other notable projects include a 700-MW coal-fired plant by H&WB Asia Pacific Corp. in Camarines Norte and a 600-MW wind farm by Airstream Renewables Corp. in Pangasinan.
Every project that reaches commercial operation strengthens our energy security, improves the reliability of our power system, and helps ensure that sufficient electricity is available to support economic growth and meet the needs of consumers.
Mario C. Marasigan, Energy Undersecretary
- Total projects endorsed: 137
- Combined capacity: 17.8 GW
- BESS projects: 85, totaling 7,610 MW
- Renewable energy projects: 46, totaling 6,206 MW
- Conventional projects: 6, totaling 1,863 MW
As of June 2026, the DoE issued 48 SIS endorsements, which included 46 new applications and two amendments. The department is also closely monitoring 200 ongoing power projects that are expected to be completed within the next three years.
Currently, the number of completed projects stands at 51, with a combined capacity of 1,864 MW, and 12 BESS projects nearing 230 MW. Energy Undersecretary Marasigan emphasized the importance of these developments for the nation's energy landscape.
