Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla has condemned the growing culture of corruption within government ranks, particularly the extortion of legitimate businesses. Speaking to members of Cebu's lechon industry, he emphasized the urgent need for reform to protect entrepreneurs.
Corruption Eroding Business Confidence
What is happening is impunity of corruption. ... They extort from businessmen and keep on asking for money.
Jesus Crispin Remulla, Ombudsman
Remulla highlighted how corruption has escalated from local officials, such as barangay captains and council members, to higher government ranks. He pointed out that this abuse of power severely impacts the cost of doing business in the Philippines.
- Government officials extorting money from business owners.
- Delays in permit issuance as a common tactic for extortion.
- Ombudsman's commitment to hold corrupt officials accountable.
He stated, "The cost of doing business is so high because there are lots of extortionists. And that is what we want to change." This statement reflects a broader concern that corruption not only stifles economic growth but also discourages foreign investment.
To combat this issue, Remulla announced the launch of the Investors' Window at the Ombudsman’s office. This initiative aims to allow businesses to report misconduct by government officials and seek redress for issues like extortion and unreasonable delays.
Remulla assured that if reports of withheld permits arise, immediate action will be taken, including suspension of the involved officials. He expressed a commitment to using the legal powers granted to his office to ensure accountability in government.
