The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has declared a yellow alert for the Visayas grid on June 22, anticipating high electricity demand amid significant power plant outages.

According to NGCP's 8 a.m. advisory, the yellow alert will be in effect from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. today. Peak demand is projected to hit approximately 2,427 megawatts (MW), while the available supply stands at around 2,593 MW.

Power Supply Strain

Currently, 25 power plants are experiencing forced outages, with an additional 15 operating below capacity, leading to a total of 944 MW of generation capacity unavailable.

A yellow alert indicates that the operating margin is insufficient to meet the grid's contingency requirements, but it does not necessarily result in power interruptions.

NGCP Advisory
  • Therma Visayas Inc. Unit 1: 169 MW offline
  • Therma Visayas Inc. Unit 2: 169 MW offline
  • Panay Energy Development Corporation Unit 3: 150 MW offline

Consumers in the Visayas are urged to conserve electricity, particularly during the peak alert hours, to help stabilize the grid.
