The Philippine government is optimistic about Mindanao's potential to lead the trillion-dollar Halal industry within ASEAN. This initiative focuses on promoting travel and tourism as part of the broader economic strategy discussed during the ongoing 48th ASEAN Summit.
Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) Chairperson Leo Tereso Magno confirmed plans to enhance direct flight connections from Mindanao to international destinations. This move aims to boost tourism and trade opportunities in the region.
Currently, direct flights from Davao City reach Doha, Singapore, and Hong Kong. The government is actively exploring additional routes to facilitate better access.
BIMP-EAGA Road Map and Halal Industry Growth
Magno also outlined key agreements under the BIMP-EAGA (Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines – East ASEAN Growth Area) framework. These include climate-smart agriculture, seamless travel, sustainable tourism, a network of production hubs, and a future-ready workforce.
The BIMP-EAGA aims to enhance economic development in underserved areas, projecting a GDP increase of approximately $720 million by 2035. Mindanao's strategic location near Indonesia and Malaysia offers significant opportunities in the Halal sector.
The potential for the Halal industry in our country is enormous. Mindanao's proximity to key markets enhances this opportunity.
Sec. Leo Tereso Magno
