Luzon and Visayas are experiencing red and yellow alerts for the third consecutive day, as power supply struggles to meet demand, according to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).
Power Supply Challenges and Grid Alerts
Both incidents highlight the vulnerability of an energy system heavily reliant on centralized infrastructure.
Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities (ICSC)
As of May 15, the Luzon grid faces significant challenges, including a yellow alert from 1 PM to 2 PM and 11 PM to midnight. The Visayas grid has a yellow alert from 2 PM to 5 PM and 9 PM to 11 PM.
The ICSC pointed to the recent tripping of key transmission lines, which resulted in a loss of approximately 2,500 megawatts from the grid. This incident emphasizes the risks tied to a centralized power infrastructure, heavily reliant on a few large facilities.
Experts argue that the existing system's inflexibility is a key contributor to the current power situation. They advocate for a shift towards a decentralized energy model that incorporates more renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and geothermal.
The call for diversification is not new. Previous instances of power shortages have similarly highlighted the risks of relying on major plants, particularly as the demand for electricity continues to rise.
The ICSC urges the government to enhance energy storage solutions and adopt more flexible generation technologies. Such changes would help ensure a reliable power supply that can adapt to fluctuations in demand.
