The Department of Transportation (DOTr) conducted inspections of various port and wharf projects in Northern Samar to verify construction progress and compliance with engineering standards.
Led by Gemma Almanzar, a project officer from the DOTr's Maritime Sector, the inspection included visits to the Mapanas and Laoang ports on May 5, following earlier evaluations at the Allen and Pambujan ports.
The inspections aimed to assess whether the projects are on track and adherent to the approved technical specifications.
Results from these evaluations will influence the release of project funding, ensuring that public resources are used effectively.
In total, six port and wharf projects worth ₱224.25 million are in progress as part of the DOTr's Port Systems Program.
Improving Maritime Connectivity
These projects are designed to enhance maritime connectivity, facilitating the movement of goods and passengers while bolstering economic activities in coastal and island communities.
Among the completed initiatives is the San Isidro Wharf in Barangay San Roque, which opened in July 2024, providing reliable access for passenger and cargo vessels.
The wharf has significantly improved inter-island transport and trade, ensuring safer access for residents and businesses.

Governor Ongchuan expressed gratitude to the DOTr for its ongoing support and emphasized the necessity of regular inspections for successful project implementation.
Although no completion timelines have been established, officials committed to continuous monitoring to guarantee timely progress across all projects.
Given Northern Samar's reliance on sea transport for commerce, the province prioritizes port development to strengthen connections between mainland and island communities.
