The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has mandated a work stoppage for six vessels owned by Atienza Interisland Ferries Inc. This action follows a catastrophic fire that occurred aboard one of their ferries, the MV June Aster.

Details of the Work Stoppage

Labor Secretary Francis Tolentino confirmed the orders during the 2026 Asean Green Jobs Forum in Makati. He noted that the vessels are currently docked in Navotas.

The six vessels anchored in Navotas were already issued work stoppage orders.

Tolentino reassured the affected crew members that their wages will continue despite the halt in operations. The duration of the stoppage will depend on the company's adherence to safety requirements.

The tragic incident involving the MV June Aster took place on September 9, 2026, while en route to Coron, Palawan. The fire resulted in the deaths of 77 individuals, attributed to a chemical spill.
