Davao City is set to revamp its traffic signaling system as part of the upcoming Davao Bus Project, according to Leonardo Pamplona, head of the Traffic Enforcement and Street Management Division.
During a media briefing, Pamplona announced that all current traffic light repairs are on hold to facilitate the transition to a more integrated transport system.
The new system will link traffic signals directly with the bus network, enhancing traffic management and prioritizing public transport routes.
Enhancements and Challenges Ahead
The plan for the Davao Bus System is that our traffic signaling will be linked directly to the bus system.
Leonardo Pamplona, Traffic Enforcement and Street Management Division Head
- Around 70 current traffic light locations will be upgraded.
- Deployment of advanced, real-time traffic management technology.
Despite these advancements, the City Transport and Traffic Management Office (CTTMO) is facing a critical shortage of traffic enforcers.
Pamplona indicated that an additional 150 traffic enforcers are needed to manage key intersections effectively.
However, budget constraints have limited hiring to merely replacing outgoing personnel, which does not address the growing demand for enforcement.
The CTTMO conducts recruitment every six months to fill vacancies but struggles to expand its workforce due to budgetary limitations.
As Davao City gears up for significant traffic system upgrades, the need for personnel and resources remains a pressing issue, potentially impacting the project's success.
