Coins.ph, a leading Philippine cryptocurrency exchange, is revolutionizing the remittance market by pivoting from retail trading to robust backend payment solutions. During Coinfest Asia in Bali, CEO Wei Zhou highlighted how the platform is processing nearly $100 million in daily transactions.
From Retail to Institutional Payments
When the market gives you lemons, you got to figure out how to make lemonade out of it. The retail crypto market... is ‘deader than dead.’
Wei Zhou, CEO, Coins.ph
Zhou's candid assessment of the retail crypto market reflects a broader trend where consumer interest has plummeted. In response, Coins.ph has focused on business-to-business (B2B) services, optimizing the Philippine payment landscape.
- Processing close to $100 million daily in stablecoin transactions.
- Offering ultra-low transaction fees, with rates as low as 5 basis points.
Zhou explained that the platform's growth stems from addressing inefficiencies in local banking, which often lacks communication and modern technology. By establishing effective settlement and foreign exchange trading systems, Coins.ph is becoming a vital player in the financial ecosystem.
Challenging the Giants
In his remarks, Zhou criticized established fintech companies like Wise, which still depend on traditional banking systems. He noted that while Wise claims significant market share, it cannot match Coins.ph's competitive rates, allowing users to transact with far lower fees.
Zhou stated, "Wise goes around saying 30% of remittances go through them. But Wise can’t get lower than 40 to 50 bips, whereas we let them get to 5 bips." This pricing strategy positions Coins.ph as a formidable disruptor.
Innovations in Remittance for Overseas Workers
Coins.ph aims to facilitate remittances for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) by minimizing the costs associated with traditional money transfer methods. Zhou explained how crypto can streamline these transactions, allowing families in the Philippines to receive funds directly in stablecoins.
He emphasized that converting USDC to pesos incurs minimal fees, significantly reducing the financial burden on OFWs and their families.
Looking Ahead: A Global Vision
Zhou envisions Coins.ph as a global digital clearinghouse, with plans to secure payment licenses in key markets. The company currently supports settlements in various currencies and aims to expand its offerings by the end of the year.
Additionally, Coins.ph is awaiting a Crypto Asset Service Provider (CASP) license from the SEC, which will enable the introduction of advanced financial products.
A Maturing Crypto Industry
Reflecting on the journey since acquiring Coins.ph, Zhou remarked on the industry's evolution. He believes that strict compliance and innovative infrastructure are essential for navigating the current market landscape.
As the crypto sector adapts to changing regulations, the success of Coins.ph may serve as a model for other companies in the region.
