In a significant move to prepare young people for a future shaped by artificial intelligence, the Citi Foundation has launched its fourth Global Innovation Challenge, pledging $25 million in funding.

This initiative aims to equip youth worldwide, particularly from low-income backgrounds, with the skills necessary to thrive in an evolving job market.

As technology rapidly transforms the future of work, young people - particularly those from low-income communities - face both significant challenges and new opportunities.

Brandee McHale, Head of Community Investing and Development at Citi and President of the Citi Foundation
  • Providing $500,000 in funding to 50 community organizations.
  • Enhancing AI and human-centric skills like prompt engineering and critical thinking.
  • Connecting youth with job opportunities through community resources.
  • Integrating AI tools into existing youth employment programs.

The Citi Foundation's efforts are timely, as the World Economic Forum reports that around 66% of employers are looking for candidates with specialized AI skills. This growing demand highlights the importance of both technical expertise and soft skills such as resilience and problem-solving.

With the digital divide widening, particularly for young people lacking access to technology, this challenge aims to bridge these gaps by fostering partnerships and resource-sharing among community organizations.

Organizations interested in participating must submit their proposals by Tuesday, October 6, at 12:00 p.m. New York Time. Recipients will be revealed in 2027, marking another step in Citi’s long-standing commitment to youth empowerment.
