Cebu City is set to launch a fuel subsidy program for more than 10,000 drivers beginning in the third week of May. This initiative was announced by Mayor Nestor Archival following the approval of Supplemental Budget No. 1 by the Cebu City Council.
The program allocates P35 million to support drivers facing financial strain due to rising fuel costs, which have been exacerbated by ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.
Distribution Method
Mayor Archival revealed that the city plans to implement a non-cash distribution method, such as fuel cards, to ensure the subsidy is used exclusively for purchasing fuel. 'We are looking to distribute fleet cards to the barangays as soon as verification is complete,' he stated.
Eligibility and Verification
The subsidy is intended for drivers of various transport services in Cebu City, including jeepneys and taxis. The exact amount of assistance per driver has yet to be determined.
To ensure only eligible drivers receive support, the city government has coordinated with the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board and other agencies to create an initial list of beneficiaries. Barangay officials will help verify local drivers to prevent fraud.
Supporting National Initiatives
This local subsidy will complement national assistance programs, including a P5,000 fuel aid provided by the Department of Social Welfare and Development and the Department of Transportation.
