The Cebu Provincial Agriculture Office is seeking a substantial P447 million budget for 2027, a significant step towards enhancing support for local farmers and fisherfolk.
This proposed budget aligns with the province's broader goal of increasing food production and minimizing reliance on outside food supplies.
Provincial Agriculture Officer Roldan Saragena expressed gratitude for the potential budget increase, noting its historic significance.
I give my appreciation to our Governor for trusting the Provincial Agriculture Office and our capacity to deliver agri-programs in our province.
Roldan Saragena, Provincial Agriculture Officer
Should the P447 million budget be approved, it would be the first time in Saragena's 32-year tenure that funding surpasses the P400 million mark.
The proposal is currently under review by the Executive Department before it reaches the Provincial Board for legislative approval.
If successful, this budget would represent a significant increase from the 2026 allocation of P365 million.
In her recent State of the Province Address, Governor Pamela Baricuatro emphasized the importance of supporting farmers and fisherfolk for sustainable agricultural practices.
We have proposed a much bigger budget to ensure that our farmers and fisherfolk receive the support they need—not only to survive each season, but to produce more, earn more, and build more secure futures for their families.
Pamela Baricuatro, Governor
To strengthen market access, the provincial government is constructing four People’s Markets in key cities, aimed at connecting local producers with consumers.
Baricuatro highlighted that food security is essential not just for health, but also for improving livelihoods and reducing poverty.
Recent initiatives include the establishment of small farm reservoirs, distribution of agricultural equipment, and launching an online platform to connect consumers with local producers.
These efforts reflect a strategic move towards enhancing agricultural sustainability in Cebu, ensuring that every family has consistent access to nutritious food.
