The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) is making strides in digital payment solutions with two major updates on the horizon: the expected launch of Apple Pay and the introduction of a tap-to-pay system for Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT1).
Apple Pay on the Verge of Launch
BSP Deputy Governor Mamerto Tangonan hinted that local banks are gearing up for the launch of Apple Pay, which has been anticipated for some time. During a recent press conference, he stated, "Stay tuned kasi may alam akong mga banks mag-lalaunch" (because I know some banks are looking to launch).
Despite earlier projections suggesting a third-quarter 2026 launch, the Philippines remains absent from Apple’s list of supported markets as of July 10.
LRT1's Tap-to-Pay System
On the transportation front, Tangonan announced that the LRT1 is set to implement a tap-to-pay system, pending a final agreement with its private operator. He expressed optimism about launching this service within the quarter.
These systems allow passengers to use their Visa or Mastercard bank cards, NFC-enabled devices, and QR codes for fare payments, offering a more convenient alternative to traditional ticket purchasing.
Future Prospects
The BSP's commitment to interoperability means that travelers can eventually use a single bank card or mobile wallet across multiple transport systems, avoiding the need for proprietary fare cards.
However, implementing cashless systems across bus networks remains a challenge, with existing options like Beep and GCash SoundPay still in limited rollout phases.
In addition to these consumer-facing projects, the BSP is also exploring initiatives like Project Agila 2, focused on tokenized Treasury bonds, and Project Mandala, aimed at improving cross-border payment systems.
