The inaugural Asean-EU Sustainability Summit in Cebu has shed light on alarming agricultural losses in the Philippines, with estimates suggesting that up to 40% of produce never reaches consumers. This issue, highlighted by business leaders, underscores the pressing need for investments in cold storage and climate-resilient farming.
Paulo Duarte, President of the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP), noted that these losses threaten food security and farmers' incomes. He called for modern technology and infrastructure to address inefficiencies in the food supply chain.
Addressing Food Waste and Rising Prices
Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. confirmed that poor logistics contribute to around 30% of agricultural waste. He stated that improving cold-chain systems could significantly lower food costs for consumers.
If we can lessen, or hopefully almost eliminate, those losses, that will be equivalent to at least 10 to 15 percent less cost for our vegetables and high-value crops like fruits.

The summit gathered approximately 200 leaders from various sectors to discuss sustainable practices, focusing on energy transition and circular economy initiatives.
Cebu's Commitment to Sustainable Growth
Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro emphasized the province's dedication to inclusive and sustainable growth. She outlined ongoing efforts to enhance climate-resilient infrastructure and promote sustainable energy projects.
Strengthening Energy Security and Circular Economy
Beyond agriculture, discussions at the summit also addressed energy security. Duarte proposed the Asean Power Grid as a solution to improve regional energy reliability and integration of renewable sources.
He urged a shift from a disposable culture towards a circular economy that prioritizes reuse and resource efficiency.
Future Trade Relations
The summit also focused on ongoing negotiations for a Philippines-European Union free trade agreement, which could enhance market access and sustainable economic cooperation.
