Senator Loren Legarda inaugurated the Philippine Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, recognizing the contributions of Filipino seafarers.
The exhibit, titled *Sea of Love / Dagat ng Pag-ibig*, is located at the Arsenale and features works by artist Jon Cuyson, curated by Mara Gladstone. This initiative aims to shed light on the often-overlooked role of Filipino seafarers in global commerce.
Legarda stated, 'The pavilion honors the Filipino seafarer, an essential yet often unseen presence in the global supply chain.' She emphasized their significant impact on both the economy and national identity.
The exhibition also addresses environmental issues, highlighting the need to protect marine ecosystems. Legarda remarked, 'For an archipelagic nation, caring for our oceans is inseparable from caring for our communities.'
Legarda has played a crucial role in the Philippines’ participation in the Biennale, which resumed in 2015 after a 51-year hiatus. She noted that the pavilion represents a commitment to maintaining a cultural presence on the global stage.
She stated, 'Through culture, a nation expresses its dignity among others.' Legarda praised the collaborative efforts of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, the Philippine Arts in Venice Biennale Coordinating Committee, and the Department of Foreign Affairs.
The Philippine Pavilion will be open to the public from May 9 to November 22, 2026.
