Azzam Khalil al-Hayya, the 23-year-old son of a senior Hamas official, died Thursday from injuries sustained in an Israeli airstrike the previous day. The attack occurred in the Al-Daraj neighborhood of Gaza City.
Al-Shifa hospital confirmed that Azzam succumbed to his wounds after the airstrike, which reportedly killed one person and injured ten others.
The Israeli military did not provide immediate comments regarding the incident. However, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel is actively targeting terrorist cells in Gaza.
This incident marks a tragic loss for Khalil al-Hayya, a prominent Hamas figure, as Azzam is the fourth of his seven sons to be killed in Israeli attacks. Two of them died before the current conflict escalated in October 2023.
Hammam, another son, was killed in a September strike in Doha, which targeted Hamas leaders and resulted in multiple casualties.
In response to the strike, Hamas released a statement claiming that Azzam's death is part of broader efforts to pressure the group's leadership amid ongoing tensions.
The ceasefire brokered by the U.S. in October has significantly reduced hostilities, yet daily violence persists as both Israel and Hamas accuse each other of violating the agreement.
On Thursday, the Israeli military reported targeting a Hamas command center in northern Gaza, while Hamas's interior ministry confirmed the deaths of three members of its internal security force in another strike.
Since the ceasefire began, over 840 Palestinians have reportedly died, according to Gaza's health ministry, while the Israeli military has reported the deaths of five soldiers.
