Nintendo has announced a price increase for its Switch 2 console, effective May 25 in Japan and September in the U.S. This decision follows a remarkable 52% rise in annual profits.
The Japanese gaming company reported a net profit of 424 billion yen (approximately $2.7 billion) for the fiscal year ending in March, a significant jump from 279 billion yen the previous year.
Annual sales also soared by 99%, reaching 2.3 trillion yen ($15 billion), driven primarily by strong demand for the Switch 2, although first-generation Switch sales saw a decline.
Details of the Price Increase
The price of the Switch 2 in Japan will rise to 59,980 yen ($382) from 49,980 yen ($318). In the United States, the new price will be $499.99, up from $449.99.
Nintendo cited challenging market conditions and rising costs as reasons for the price adjustment, reflecting broader economic pressures faced by major exporters.
Future Outlook
Despite the price hike, Nintendo expects an 11% decline in profits for the fiscal year through March 2027, projecting a profit of 2.1 trillion yen ($13 billion).
The company anticipates selling 16.5 million Switch 2 units in the coming fiscal year, down nearly 17% from 19.86 million the previous year. Software sales, however, are expected to grow.
Nintendo aims to launch more titles for the Switch 2, including new games from well-known franchises like Final Fantasy.
Nintendo Press Release
The recent release of 'The Super Mario Galaxy Movie' has also contributed positively, grossing over $800 million since its launch.
Nintendo's stock saw a 3.6% increase following the earnings announcement, reflecting investor confidence amid the company's strong performance.
