Residents in Mississippi have filed a class action lawsuit against Elon Musk's xAI and SpaceX, claiming that noise from a nearby data center has created a public nuisance.

The lawsuit was filed on June 9 in federal court in Oxford, Mississippi, by three residents representing over 10,000 affected individuals, arguing that the companies have failed to mitigate the disturbances.

Plaintiffs accuse the companies of negligence, stating that the persistent noise from gas-fired turbines has not only diminished their quality of life but has also negatively impacted property values.

Robert Wiygul, representing the plaintiffs, emphasized the emotional toll, stating, "Our homes are supposed to be a sanctuary for us against the world...when they are invaded by noise 24 hours a day, it takes that fundamental peace away."

Growing Concerns Over AI Infrastructure's Impact

This lawsuit is part of a broader trend where communities are increasingly opposing the environmental and social repercussions of technology infrastructure, particularly as the AI sector expands.

The Southaven data center, which xAI developed with over $20 billion in investment, aims to power AI initiatives but has raised alarms over its operational noise.

In April, the NAACP also filed a lawsuit against xAI, alleging violations of U.S. environmental regulations related to the same facility.

The U.S. Justice Department's recent indication of potential intervention in the NAACP case further highlights the government's scrutiny of AI infrastructure and its implications.

As technology companies grow, their impact on local communities is increasingly under examination, raising questions about the balance between innovation and public welfare.
