The 2026-2027 UAAP basketball season has officially commenced, with Far Eastern University (FEU) at the helm, themed 'For Everyone, UAAP.' This theme highlights the collective efforts of athletes, coaches, and support staff.
FEU previously hosted the league during Season 80, and as the new season begins, fans are eager to witness how the La Salle Green Archers will defend their men's championship without center Mike Phillips.
Ateneo Blue Eagles are also in the spotlight, entering the season under new head coach Louie Alas, following the tragic passing of players Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili.
Key Changes for Season 89
In a significant rule change, the UAAP has expanded the foreign player limit. Each team is now permitted to have two FSAs, allowing greater flexibility in player rotation.
However, teams must declare which FSA will play prior to the game, promoting strategic planning.
Another major amendment targets the 'one-and-done' phenomenon, where players transfer for a single season. Starting in Season 90, new regulations will mandate a year of residency for any player transferring from a non-UAAP institution before they can compete.
The rationale is the board wanted somehow for the student-athletes to inculcate the culture of their respective schools before they compete.

The league's officiating will also see enhancements. Following recent training with FIBA officials, stricter enforcement of game decorum will be prioritized, with technical fouls expected to be more frequently called.
The new suspension system will penalize players with two unsportsmanlike fouls or three technical fouls, affecting their eligibility for post-season awards.
These changes reflect the UAAP's commitment to improving the quality of play and ensuring a competitive environment that aligns more closely with international standards.
