Filipino-American Grandmaster Wesley So has won the 2026 United States Chess Championship, marking his fourth title in this prestigious event. He triumphed over top-ranked American player Fabiano Caruana, who had previously won four consecutive championships.

A Dramatic Playoff

The final showdown took place at the Saint Louis Chess Club in Missouri. In the rapid playoff's second game, Caruana made a questionable move early on, advancing his bishop and exposing a central pawn.

So seized the opportunity, capturing the pawn and establishing control on the board. He castled his king on the queen-side and advanced his pawns toward Caruana’s position. Despite Caruana's attempts to counter, he ultimately resigned after So's 33rd move.

It was a tough tournament, but I stayed focused and managed to overcome the pressure during the playoffs.

Wesley So, Grandmaster

Throughout the tournament, So displayed remarkable skill, winning his first two matches against 2018 US champion Sam Shankland and Jeffrey Xiong. He also achieved impressive victories over rising grandmasters Andy Woodward and Ray Robson.

For his victory, So takes home a prize of $56,000. This latest win further cements his legacy in American chess, coming on the heels of his success at the Sinquefield Cup in August and his participation in the World Chess Olympiad.

The US Chess Championship remains one of the most challenging chess tournaments globally, attracting elite players from around the world. So's achievements alongside Caruana's victories from 2016 and from 2022 to 2025 highlight the competitive nature of the tournament.
