Former NBA player Jason Collins has died at the age of 47 following a courageous battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer.
Collins' family announced his passing on May 12, expressing their heartbreak over the loss of their beloved husband, son, brother, and uncle.
In September, Collins publicly revealed his diagnosis and shared that he was undergoing treatment.
His family stated, “We are heartbroken to share that Jason Collins...has died after a valiant fight with glioblastoma.”
Collins made history in 2013 when he became the first active male athlete in a major North American sports league to come out as gay.
Over his 13-year NBA career, he played for several teams, including the Houston Rockets, New Jersey Nets, and Boston Celtics. He was selected 18th overall in the 2001 NBA draft.
Collins was instrumental in leading the Nets to consecutive NBA Finals in 2002 and 2003.
His announcement in *Sports Illustrated* garnered significant support, including from then-President Barack Obama.
“Jason changed lives in unexpected ways and was an inspiration to all who knew him,” the family added.
