Filipino tennis player Alexandra "Alex" Eala is set to move up two spots to No. 42 in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings. This change will take effect on Monday.
Eala, who was ranked No. 44 in the previous update on April 20, achieved this ranking boost following her participation in the WTA 1000 Madrid Open.
In the Madrid Open, Eala reached the round of 64, which mirrored her performance from last year and allowed her to maintain 35 ranking points, bringing her total to 1,285.
Eala faced world No. 21 Elise Mertens in the second round, where she was defeated 2-6, 1-6.
In the first round, Eala made headlines by defeating seasoned player Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, a 12-time champion, with a score of 6-3, 6-3.
Apart from singles, Eala also participated in the doubles event in Madrid alongside Turkish partner Zeynep Sönmez.
The duo won their first match against the Taiwanese-Hungarian team of Chan Hao-ching and Fanny Stollar, securing a 6-2, 6-2 victory.
However, Eala and Sönmez were eliminated in the round of 16 by the formidable Czech-American pair of Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend, losing 1-6, 5-7.
Eala's doubles performance earned her 120 ranking points, lifting her total to 888 and positioning her for a career-high doubles ranking of No. 88.
This marks a significant rise, moving up 13 spots from No. 101 just two weeks ago, surpassing her previous high of No. 99.
Next, Eala is set to compete in another prestigious 1000 event at the Italian Open, scheduled from May 5 to 17.
