Ukraine's Deputy Foreign Minister Olexandr Mischenko expressed dissatisfaction with countries, including the Philippines, that continue to import Russian crude oil. This statement comes amid the ongoing oil crisis and geopolitical tensions.
Energy Secretary Sharon Garin revealed that the Philippines has sought an extension from the United States for a sanctions waiver to facilitate further purchases of Russian oil and petroleum products.
Mischenko stated, "Of course, we are not happy that some country uses Russian crude oil. We understand specific situations." He emphasized that collaboration with Russia could potentially prolong its aggressive actions.
The Deputy Foreign Minister urged allied nations to diversify their energy sources to reduce dependence on Russia, warning that dealings with the aggressor could complicate global security.
Despite these concerns, Mischenko noted that Philippine leadership recognizes the complexities of their situation. He remarked, "Fortunately, the leadership of the Philippines fully understands the situation, and they're looking for other possibilities."
He acknowledged that the volume of oil imports from Russia by the Philippines is relatively small, but still highlighted the importance of avoiding any financial support for the war in Ukraine.
