The impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte is poised to commence on July 6, 2026, according to Senate Secretary Renato Bantug Jr., despite challenges during the pre-trial phase.

Challenges in Evidence Marking

July 6 is still the date of the start of the trial proper of the impeachment case. It may be difficult on the part of the court…but at this point, July 6 as the start of the trial proper is not yet an impossibility. Tight but not impossible.

Renato Bantug Jr., Senate Secretary

Bantug noted that the marking of evidence, particularly for Articles I and II of the impeachment articles, has been time-consuming due to the extensive documentation involved. He expressed optimism that the pre-trial could wrap up by Thursday, June 25, aligning with the established impeachment calendar.

As the Senate prepares for the trial, Bantug is also expected to consult with Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian regarding a request from House prosecutors to access sealed documents from the Bureau of Internal Revenue pertaining to Duterte's tax records.

The Senate's decision-making process regarding the sealed box will involve discussions among Senate members, as no established rules currently govern the procedure.
