The Supreme Court of the Philippines has disbarred lawyer Jose R. Hidalgo due to dishonest conduct involving the use of a false Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) compliance number.
The decision, released by the SC en banc, comes after Hidalgo misrepresented his compliance in pleadings for his client, who was involved in a malicious prosecution case.
The opposing counsel challenged Hidalgo's compliance status, presenting a certification from the MCLE Office that confirmed he had not met the required standards.
Subsequently, the Regional Trial Court (RTC) ordered Hidalgo to explain his actions, leading to further scrutiny by the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP).
Findings and Disciplinary Action
Upon investigation, the IBP concluded that Hidalgo's actions constituted serious dishonesty and fraud. They recommended his disbarment, which the Supreme Court upheld.
The act of indicating patently false information in pleadings filed before the courts constitutes bad faith and dishonesty, and shows blatant disrespect of the courts and its rules.

In its ruling, the SC noted that Hidalgo's misconduct not only violated legal ethics but also negatively impacted his client's case.
The court emphasized the seriousness of such offenses under the Code of Professional Responsibility and Accountability.
Hidalgo's disbarment is effective immediately, and he has also been fined PHP 35,000 for willfully ignoring the IBP's directives to submit required documentation.
