Health workers and advocates rallied in Baguio City on May 7, advocating for significant reforms in the Philippine healthcare system. The participants highlighted critical issues such as inadequate compensation, understaffed facilities, and ongoing violence against community health workers.
The event coincided with National Health Workers’ Day and began at Session Road, concluding at Malcolm Square. Protesters called for increased salaries, improved working conditions, greater public health funding, and enhanced protection for health workers.
According to the Alliance of Health Workers, the deteriorating state of public health services has exacerbated the burden on both healthcare providers and patients. Many professionals are seeking opportunities abroad due to poor pay and lack of institutional support.
The Plight of Community Health Workers
Speakers at the rally emphasized the dedication of health workers despite economic struggles and threats, particularly against those engaged in community health initiatives. They also called for the immediate release of physician Ana Rilloraza-Leung and community worker Marc Mendiola, currently facing charges tied to their community service.
Health workers should never have to choose between serving the people and ensuring their own safety.

Rayne Suyam-Gallawen of the Community Health Education Services and Training in the Cordillera detailed the challenges faced by community health workers in remote areas. Many traverse difficult terrains to provide crucial services but often face harassment and intimidation.
Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong addressed the crowd, acknowledging the sacrifices of health workers. He pointed out that many medical professionals leave the country in search of better opportunities.
Magalong urged reforms in the healthcare sector, emphasizing the need for better compensation, safer working environments, and competent leadership in public health institutions. He also stressed the importance of enhancing public health services and managing medical resources effectively.
