The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has detained two fishermen for allegedly engaging in compressor fishing, a method deemed illegal under local laws, off the coast of Barangay Danao in Cajidiocan, Romblon.

Details of the Operation

The Coast Guard's Search and Rescue (SAR) Team discovered the fishermen during a routine patrol aimed at locating missing individuals amid adverse weather conditions. Upon approaching their motorized fishing boat, the team found the suspects utilizing a compressor for underwater fishing.

This practice violates Municipal Ordinance No. 03-11, Section 67, which is part of the Comprehensive Fishery Ordinance of Cajidiocan.

The use of compressors for fishing is not only illegal but also harmful to marine ecosystems. It can lead to overfishing and degradation of fish habitats.

Philippine Coast Guard spokesperson
  • Apprehended fishermen are residents of Barangay Cambalo in Cajidiocan.
  • Confiscated items include a motorized fishing boat, compressor engine, aluminum air tank, spear guns, and around 15 kilograms of assorted fish.

The Coast Guard has placed the fishermen in temporary custody while securing the confiscated equipment. These items will be submitted to the Cajidiocan Municipal Agriculture Office for further administrative action.
