On June 8, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) issued a yellow alert for the Visayas grid, indicating potential supply risks as demand spikes.
Details of the Yellow Alert
Effective from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., the alert comes as peak demand is projected to reach 2,510 megawatts (MW), while available generation is slightly higher at 2,659 MW.
The yellow alert indicates an insufficient operating margin to meet the grid's contingency requirements.
National Grid Corporation of the Philippines
- 23 power plants are currently on forced outage.
- 11 others are operating below capacity, totaling 881 MW offline.
The situation is exacerbated by the ongoing unavailability of key coal plants, including Therma Visayas Units 1 and 2, and Panay Energy's Unit 3.
While a yellow alert does not guarantee power interruptions, it highlights the urgency for improved supply stability as the region heads into peak demand hours.
