At the TOKEN2049 conference in Singapore, Bitmine Immersion Technologies revealed it will cease purchasing Ethereum after reaching a 5% cap of the cryptocurrency's circulating supply. Chairman Tom Lee made the announcement, emphasizing the importance of maintaining market decentralization.
Bitmine's Strategic Decision
Currently, Bitmine holds 6 million ether, approximately 4.9% of the total supply, and requires about 100,000 more tokens to reach the cap. Lee indicated that this strategy aligns with recommendations from Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin and foundation researchers.
We only need to get another 100,000 ETH to get to 5%. That is something that Vitalik kind of asked us to do, to stop at five.

The decision coincides with a broader shift in the digital asset landscape, as corporate treasuries now control an estimated 7% of circulating ether. This move is part of Bitmine's strategy to balance shareholder interests while positioning itself for potential market gains.
- Capping Ethereum treasury at 5% to prevent centralization
- Institutional interest driving a new bull market cycle
- Technical indicators suggest market recovery
Lee identified several factors setting this market cycle apart from past trends, including institutional tokenization of real-world assets and a projected $100 trillion wealth transfer over the next decade. These trends could significantly impact the future value of Ethereum.
Technical analysis supports Lee's optimistic outlook. Bitcoin's rise above its 200-day moving average and Ethereum's golden cross on August 19 signal potential longevity in the current market cycle.
Bitmine's treasury program, initiated 15 months ago, generates around $1 million daily through its Maven staking operations. Additionally, the company has launched a $350 million share buyback and issued preferred shares to optimize its capital.
Looking ahead, Lee believes that institutional initiatives from firms like BlackRock and JPMorgan, alongside ongoing asset tokenization, could elevate Ethereum's value to long-term projections of $22,000.
