The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has issued urgent red and yellow alerts for the Visayas grid due to significant power supply shortages.
The red alert will be in effect today from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., while a yellow alert will follow from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. During this period, peak demand is projected to hit 2,305 megawatts (MW), while only 2,059 MW will be available.
NGCP reported that 29 power plants are currently on forced outage, and an additional 18 plants are operating below their full capacity.
Mindanao Also Affected by Power Alerts
A yellow alert has also been issued for the Mindanao grid, which will be in effect from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Peak demand in Mindanao is estimated at 2,376 MW, outpacing the available capacity of 2,517 MW.
In Mindanao, 29 plants are on forced outage, with five others operating at reduced capacities, totaling 804.1 MW unavailable.
A red alert status is issued when power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid’s regulating requirement.
NGCP Advisory
In contrast, a yellow alert indicates that the operating margin is inadequate to fulfill the transmission grid's contingency requirements.
